Is it usually safe to eat sushi and other dishes made with raw fish when you’re pregnant? Depending on the type of fish used, it may be necessary to ensure that it has been frozen beforehand to eliminate parasites. Pregnant individuals should also limit their intake of certain fish, such as tuna and oily fish, due to potential health risks.
NHS advice on fish consumption during pregnancy includes: You should eat no more than 2 portions of oily fish per week, such as salmon, trout, mackerel, or herring. Additionally, limit tuna intake to no more than 2 tuna steaks (about 140g cooked or 170g raw) or 4 medium-size cans (about 140g drained) per week.
Eating fish while trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding is beneficial for both maternal health and baby development. However, some fish contain elevated levels of mercury and pollutants, which can be harmful. Pregnant individuals should avoid raw shellfish and ensure any shellfish consumed is thoroughly cooked to reduce the risk of food poisoning.
Guidance from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) and the Committee on Toxicity: Shark, swordfish, and marlin should be completely avoided during pregnancy or when trying to conceive. These fish may contain high levels of mercury, which can affect the developing baby’s nervous system. Breastfeeding women and other adults should consume no more than 1 portion per week of these fish.
Oily fish recommendations: Girls and women who haven’t reached menopause—including those trying to conceive, pregnant, or breastfeeding—should limit intake to 2 portions per week, with each portion being approximately 140g.
Tuna guidelines: Women trying to conceive or who are pregnant should consume no more than 4 cans of tuna2 tuna steaks. Tuna contains more mercury than other fish, though breastfeeding women are not subject to this limit. Note that tuna is not classified as oily fish, so it does not count toward the oily fish weekly limit.
Supplement caution: Unless advised by a GP, pregnant women should avoid fish liver oil supplements, which are high in vitamin A (retinol). Excessive vitamin A can be harmful to the unborn baby. It is also recommended to avoid any supplements containing vitamin A during pregnancy.
